Initially located outside the Braşov city wall, the Fort was built in 1524 on a hill as a wooden construction with four
towers. Destroyed in a battle against the Moldavians only five years after it was built, the Fort came to be restored in
1554. It was subsequently enriched with four bastions around the corners that remain standing. An inscription at the gate
dating back to 1630 still bares the city’s heraldic insignia of that time. Over the years, the Fort served as a
military garrison and later as a prison.
Perched on a hill standing guard over the old city, the fort is now known as Cetate, a restaurant and winery decorated in
medieval style.
