The Black Tower

When the first fortification wall of the citadel was erected in the 14th Century, a massive tower was built on the hill called The Black Tower. It was designed to stop the enemies from approaching the fortification walls of the city. The tower is over 10 m high with its entrance, approximately 2 m above the ground, accessible only by ladder. The connection with the city was made through a 30 m long drawing bridge. For defense purposes, the tower had galleries on the inside, on three levels. On the last floor, guards had an overview of the city and would sound the alarm in case of invasion or fire.

The Black Tower was so named after a great fire caused by a thunder bolt in 1559 charred the structure. Today, after several restorations, the Black Tower has a glass pyramid-shaped roof, and hosts a section of the County History Museum of Braşov

The White Tower

The White Tower is located in the northern part of the city up the Romuri hill, at approximately 30 meters above the city. The semicircular tower is positioned with the circular side toward the hill and at the entrance, a drawbridge. The original chimney of the tower remains intact.

According to old chronicles, the White Tower was built sometime in the 15th Century and was named for its light colored plaster, which appeared even whiter after the fire charred the Black Tower to its right. The White Tower was defended by the Tinsmiths’ and Brasssmiths’ Guilds.
