This Hungarian version of Mardi Gras is 200years old, borrowed by the Hungarians from neighboring Saxons, marking the beginning of the Easter Fast.

The ‘Shooting of the Rooster’ is a tradition within the Hungarian community of Ţara Bârsei performed on the first day of Easter. The origin of the tradition is based on a local legend of a Tartar invasion in the 14th Century that forced villagers to take refuge in the fortress.

The Juni (youth) festival takes place in Braşov at the end of May. Perhaps the largest and most colorful event in the city, the festival begins with a gathering of people at Uniri Square.

Measuring milk is the annual event marking the cattle and sheep herds departure to the mountains.Sheep breeders gather in every village to decide together where to set sheepfolds for the year, who the herdkeeper will be and whom they will hire to look for the sheep during the grazing hours.

Santilia is an age-old feast of the shepherds connected to the celebration of the Sun and fire god. This tradition is in the middle of the pastoral season, on St Elie’s day (July 20th). This pastoral day was tightly connected to the life and activities of the shepherds of Sacele who used to go across wide areas of land with their sheep herds.
