Founded in 1895, Poiana Braşov became a ski resort in 1906 and housed its first major sports competition, the Student Winter Games, in 1951.
Throughout the centuries Bran Castle watched over the pass that was part of the trading route that led to the West as far as Flanders and Germany, and to the South and East as far as Turkey and the Middle East.
The Fortress Festival started in 1968 and became a tradition, having been celebrated by the town of Rupea every year ever since, except the first two years after the Revolution in 1989. In 2006, the 36th edition of the festival was held.
